Commercial Bank of Kuwait Advises Against Dealing with Unlicensed Financial Entities

As part of its ongoing participation in the "Let's Be Aware" campaign, Commercial Bank of Kuwait continues its efforts to enhance financial and banking literacy across all segments of society. The Bank remains dedicated to raising awareness the risks of dealing with unlicensed financial entities, thereby helping to protect customers and reinforce the safety and stability of the financial system.

In this regard, Abdulaziz Ali, Head of Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism, underscored the importance of dealing only with licensed financial institutions that operate under the supervision of the relevant regulatory authorities such as Central Bank of Kuwait. He noted that the rapid evolution of financial services and the growing diversity of delivery channels make it necessary for customers to verify the legal status of any service provider before entering into any financial transaction.

He further explained that certain unlicensed entities may offer a range of financial services—such as money transfers, financing, installment plans, or debt settlement—beyond the official legal and regulatory frameworks. Engaging with such entities in dealings may expose customers to significant financial and legal risks, in addition to the complete absence of the controls and rights that are otherwise guaranteed by regulated and supervised institutions.

He added that the dangers of engaging with unlicensed entities extend beyond the potential loss of funds or exposure to financial fraud. These entities may also be exploited to channel or conceal proceeds derived from illicit sources, or to facilitate activities linked to money laundering, terrorist financing, and other financial crimes. Such practices can have serious adverse impacts on individuals, society, and the broader economy.

He also pointed out that licensed financial institutions are strictly committed to implementing all regulatory directives, governance standards, transparency requirements, and risk management principles. This commitment not only protects customer rights and bolsters confidence in the financial sector but also plays a vital role in supporting national efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing while safeguarding the integrity of the financial system.

The Bank urges its customers to verify that any entity they intend to deal with is duly licensed and subject to the oversight by the competent authorities before utilizing any of its financial services. The Bank further stresses the critical importance of reporting any suspicious financial activities or practices, as public awareness is essential to protecting society and curbing financial crime.
